Hi Jim!
Glad to see you registered for Nat'l.
I have used the device, or an ancestor of it. It works very well as long as it stays put on your leg. If it starts to slide around it can be a bit less accurate.
Other things that I've tried have been:
1.) rope and plate: tie a 2.5 to a rope and to your belt. Make it just long enough to hit the floor when you break below parallel.
2.) Box
3.) firewood technique: When you think you have enough, go get one more load. When you think you're deep enough, go down 1 more "click".
4. havn't tried it, but I've seen a fella that hung a wiffle ball from the top of the rack till the ball was even with where his head needed to be for a proper depth squat. He'd squat down till he was staring at the ball, then back up. Looked goofy, but seemed to work.
