If you can set a record, why waste strength and energy by doing all three attempts. Say for example I can break a deadlift record, I'm not going to use unnecessary energy. I had this happen in Erie three years ago. The meet was in the bag, I went after the deadlift record, but hit the wall at the lockout with 665, due in part to me going for all attempts in previous lifts. A little strategy can save a lot of aggravation so, in a sense I would go 1 squat attempt maximum 2 bench, and go all out in the deadlift. Had I not wasted so much energy in the squat I most likely would've got the 665 locked out.
