Posted by Amy My daughter was just under 3-years old when she had to have four teeth extracted and many more filled. It's hard enough to see your child suffer a major medical procedure, but when it's considered "preventable" you feel even worse. Here's the catch. It's not as "preventable" as you might think. Kids with this deletion have more dental problems then average kids. (Laura who is our daughter with the deletion is the only one of our FIVE children with any dental problems. The others have perfect teeth without a single filling among them.) In fact, a genetic counseler at Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan told me that children with ANY genetic disorder seem to have more dental problems than the general population. So don't feel that you failed as a parent. But do get it corrected as soon as possible and know that for the rest of his life, Connor will probably have to be very attentive to his dental health. Good luck ,and if his teeth should need work, remember, at least you're catching it early so the permanant teeth can come in strong.

Melonie,
For what it's worth, my suggestion is: take Connor in to a pediatric dentist at your earliest convenience.
Also, dentists can use a sealant to help protect teeth against decay. Our dentist puts it on the kids molars (once the permanant teeth are in). It does a good job of protecting the surface of the tooth, but doesn't do anything for decay that might pop up between teeth. That may be what you're thinking of re: the special protectant (?)
