: I have a 6 week old with mild TOF. He
: is going to have surgery when he 6
: months. I am concerned because he
: does not make consistent eye contact
: and rarely smiles. I know they
: looked him over in the hospital for
: signs of Digeorge but didn't see
: anything that alarmed them at the
: time. I am just wondering if anybody
: else saw these signs in their child.
: I don't know if I am being paranoid.

:Hi
My son Joshua were born prematurely. He is now 2years and 8 months old.I complained about the same problem. Even when he did make eye contact it was if his eyes were vacant and he does really see a person. He never use to smile or have any expression, except for when he cried and then you had to look at him to see when he was crying, because no sound will come out.People and the doctors told me that I must remember that he was born prematurely, even my friends and family. I just knew something was not right. As a nurse I worked with premature babies and they responded when happy or unhappy. when Joshua was six weeks old he stop breathing and he was admitted back into the neonatal iccu.He was back in the incubator. Oh, he also had very cold hands and feet and no matter what I did they could get warm. I use to put them in warm water, wrapped them in cotton wool. the cover them in bandages and put muttins and socks. The doctors seemed to think that it was due to his heart condition. Back to the neonatal unit. The nurses observe that in the morning Joshua would have high body temperatures and they would turn the heat off, as soon as they did that he will cool and and his temperature will be subnormal. He could not regulate his body temperature. His thyroid levels were check and he had hypothyroidism. Then they had to do so test to check if the problem was the thyroid or from his brain. After a couple of days the result was back and they started Joshua on thyroxine tablets. Within two days a person could notice that the one corner seems to move as if he wanted to smile. Gradually Joshua's vacant eyes filled with emotion. It still took him a couple of months to interact with facial expressions and hands. I think it was due to the fact that he did not get medication from birth. The thyroid hormones plays a role in growth hormones ( at six months he still looked like a new born baby) and several other hormones.
Did they performed the FISH test on your baby?
Could you let me know please.
