Posted by Denise Meador on 10/29/2006, 2:44 am, in reply to "Re: Sleep problems" My 16 year old who we are in process of having tested for VCFS has bipolar, and he never had problems with being scared at nighttime until he was about 8 then he started having bad nightmares. Over the course of several years we saw other symptoms start to occur. Sleep disturbances, such as not needing as much sleep, increased irritability, more hyperactive, or the other extreme more lethargic. Go to www.bipolar.com and read the article on sleep and nightmares. I'm not saying your child has bipolar, but I would continue to monitor for other signs. My 9 year old daughter is having problems this year with the same thing, and now I'm starting to worry if we are starting to see early signs with her... Sleep disturbances and frequent nightmares, can be an early indicator of bipolar. It has to do with the regulatory system being out of whack.

Mariah, 9, starting to wonder about early bipolar signs
: I have a 9 year old son who has
: sleep problems. He has been a bad
: sleeper since about 2 years but over
: the last year it has got much much
: worse. He now refuses to sleep in
: his own room and will only sleep
: with me. He will only get into bed
: if I am with him and wakes approx 10
: times a night to check! He says he
: has bad dreams, feels ill, etc but I
: think these are just excuses. He is
: a fairly anxious child. Nobody
: seems to want to give help with this
: problem ie doctors, psychologists,
: etc. They say to get a good routine
: but have been trying to establish a
: good routine for last 5 years!!!!!
: Any ideas......... My son no longer
: has sleepovers at friends houses or
: grandparents or cousins. The
: problem is now huge

: Does anyone have sleep problems with
: their child? My eight-year old with
: VCFS is constantly waking up at
: night with nightmares. Overall
: she's a fairly anxious child, and
: within the last year she's mentioned
: two experiences where she says she's
: heard voices. (NOT what I want to
: hear given the prevalence of
: Schitzophrenia (sp??) with these
: kids. Anyway, I'm just wondering
: what others have run into.
: Thanks
