seems to me the problem is keeping them ON the ship, with the single exception ACL! who have a fully cellular system, which for a year round North Atlantic line is very sensible!.

It seems to me that on- and offloading container ships could be made a lost faster and simpler if they were to slide on and off the ship... Imagine the ship having a multi-level railed superstructure that could belly up alongside a matching superstructure dockside. The containers, revamped to have wheels underneath, could quickly slide row-by-row off the ship and onto the dockside structure. Elevator like lifts would then lower them to ground level for train or truck pickup. Just a thought... or the beginning of one.
