Future conversion project

The USN is building a number of amphibious fast transports at Austal Shipbuilding here in Mobile. One of these already in service, the USNS Burlington, is currently in the Litton Ingalls yard in nearby Pascagoula, Mississippi, where she is being refitted as a hospital ship. If standard practice is followed, she'll be painted white and feature large red crosses. That will be a nice bit of color for this class, which like the Independence class LCS variant, is made of aluminum and which is not painted at all....
