Re: Question on US Destroyer Escorts
According to THE BUCKLEY-CLASS DESTROYERS ESCORTS by Bruce H Franklin, only three BUCKLEY Class ships were completed with twin 40mm guns. The rest were all armed with 1.1's because of a shortage of 40mm mounts. Later in the war, some of the ships had their 1.1"s replaced with twin 40mm's.
No mention is made as to whether any ships that had their torpedo tubes replaced by the four single 40mms also had twin 40's replace their 1.1"s. There are photos of some of these ships in the book. None of them appear to have twin 40mms instead of 1.1"s. That however, is not definitive.
I've been going back to look at my collection of Neptun DE's. A couple of things I've noticed about the models:
1) Evarts (class) is modeled with a twin 40mm aft,
which some of the class did have, but not the Evarts itself which had a quad 1.1in.
2) Buckley (class) early has a quad 1.1in, which is true for some members of the class, like England, although maybe not Buckley.
3) Cannon (class) early has a quad 1.1in, which Canon did not have.
4) Buckley (class) modified with four single 40mm and one twin 40mm. I've seen several photos of modified Buckley class but these but always with a quad 1.1in instead of the twin 40mm.
I have two questions: were there any Canon class with quad 1.1in, and were there any Buckley class with the four single and one twin 40mm? Very few sources admit to the quad 1.1in.
