Recently drove past the USS Alabama, and she had her massive SK-2 parabolic radar antenna rotating... interesting to see the rate at which it went around - a little faster than I would have envisioned. The specific radar on the Alabama is partly responsible for one of the greatest USN victories ever - the Battle of the Philippine Sea/Great Mariana's Turkey shoot. Alabama made first contact with the approachin IJN aerial assault, at an unexpectedly long range. The CinC doubted the report at first b/c of the range (190 miles first detection), only to have it confirmed a few minutes later by Iowa. Alabama and crew were later commended for setting up the massive ensuing aerial victory.
