Maybe it is a technicality, but IMHO the 2nd "World War" started in December 1941, prior to that there was the "European War" and a Sino-Japanese Conflict. I realize most Histories will retroactively date the start as 1939, 1936, or even 1918.
JACOB JONES (DD-130) was the first US destroyer sunk by German submarine torpedo in January 1942, after the conflict went worldwide. The others lost prior were by Japanese carrier A/C in a Harbour attack, and one lost a battle with King Neptune. RUBEN JAMES was sunk prior to the US entering the war, i.e. before it became a "World War".(like PANAY)
Not sure what you mean here. DD-61 JACOB JONES was the first U.S. destroyer sunk by U-boat in the World Wars. If you meant in each World War, REUBEN JAMES is correct for WW II.
How about DD-61 and DD-130? (had to word specifically as there were two others sunk earlier in WW2 by other means)
Since the question asked "...World Wars" that would include WW I. That would be the JACOB JONES sunk on December 6, 1917 by U-53.
Along similar lines as those below:
What was the first US Destroyer sunk by German U-Boot during the World Wars?
