The loss of GLORIOUS can be blamed on gross negligence at the highest levels. That the escort provided was so minimal can only be ascribed to enormous complacency on the part of the Admiralty. Putting the ship within range of German surface units with only two destroyers was a risk that did not need to be taken, as larger units such as RENOWN could have been provided as well as more destroyers. The Admiralty’s negligence was compounded by the ship’s captain, who could have made a serious effort to immediately spot the recovered aircraft far aft and armed and brought his torpedo bombers up to the flight deck for use in an emergency. Instead, he did nothing, treating his aircraft and aircrews as little more than cargo.
