I use a Stabilo Superfine point OHP pen that is permanent and draw the lines on the model. You can either do the whole red stripe like this, or, draw the outside of the lines and then paint the inside - you get a nice sharp edge to the colour either way. As before, apply a light coat of varnish on the base colour first.
