thx for the discussion on that matter and that you generally like our models.
As it was written, SW refuses to print thinner layers for e.g. masts because the material FUD / FXD is much better for smal Details on the models (Better than WSF) but in the same time it is much more sensitive and will break when you clips / cut it out of the frame.
You are also correct when you say that there are other 3D Printers who could print in thinner layers and of cause we did a "market research" but we have 2 issues in that case: we would have to change the wayy of designing our 3 D CADs and learn it in another way and the costs would raise extremly. For the Katori it would mean that we would have to offer it for more than 100 EUR. We really think it is not worth to change everthing we have build up yet.
Pls have in mind that there are also normal Producers in different Qualities, especially with the mast or derricks. That is not only a critic Point for 3D models, you also could discuss that in the same way with metal models. But nobody does it because it is common and well excepted.
At the moment, it seems to be the fate of 3D models that alot of aspects are discussed on them but not on metal ones.
For the moment, Stephan and me are happy with our models and in the time of no new releases from e.g. Navis / Neptun and an uncertain future of Optatus Berlin, we are of the opinion that our models are a Support for our Hobby and will help to keep it running.
Maybe you could have more an eye on that and not so much on the thickness of our masts which hardly could be seen in your display cases :)
So happy collecting and many greetings form Germany

: I saw the printed model at Paul's home at
: the last NorCal SMSC meeting. I can verify
: that this particular model was a kit, with,
: as Kevin says, the parts included on
: "sprues" inside the hollow hull.
: Paul did an amazing job with this model, and
: I am, as always, highly awed with his work!

: Couldn't the masts be printed separately?
: completed a number of Shapeways printed
: models from various makers where parts were
: printed separately. The Fort Drum I'm
: working on has the turrets, crane, and some
: other small parts *inside* the main casting
: sort of on 'sprues'. Not sure how this is
: done but it appears to work well.
