Almost sure that the Royal Navy would've been totally kicked out from Med !
Fortunately, Pétain kept cold blood to dont' compromise recent terms of armistice old of 11 days ! The goal wasn't "war to war" but economic colonies and policy preservation. And to dont' pactize anything with hostile Italians not in war ,yet ...(They declared war on France only waiting it was defeated by Germans ... So, not too much risky for them :-) ... Churchill escaped to the worst fate that he guessed with the mistake of Kébir then eating more his hat ...
But major interest of occupied people preservation primed and no need to invenom with Alies more than need with the following of the war ...
Despite of all what is said against Pétain, he was more calm that Churchill and wasn't always so bad leader in all his decisions ...
: My point was the most useful ( to the Germans
: ) ships in the French fleet were mostly not
: even attacked, ( exception Dunkerque ), and
: that it was really pretty unrealistic to
: think the Germans could man the ships that
: would have been useful to them, and the
: French would not fight against Britain, and
: finally there was little chance of these
: ships escaping through the Straits of
: Gibraltar anyway.
: Possibly, they could have cause the British
: problems in the Med, but again, it's
: unlikely the Germans could have crewed them.
: But again, I'm glad it wasn't my decision.
