Re: History quiz #8 redux
The following information is from "Night Action Off Cape Matapan" by S.W.C. Pack: The Warspite and Valiant opened fire on the Italian Cruiser Fiume from a range of 2900 (Warspite) and 4000 yards (Valiant). Of Warspite's first salvo 5 of 6 shells (Y turret could not bear on the target) hit the Fiume. Reportedly one of the shells hit Y turret and lifted much of the gunhouse over the side.
Warspite's actions were certainly legendary as she also recorded one of the longest gunnery hits on a moving target. This happened during the Battle of Calabria when Warspite hit the Italian Battleship Giulio Cesare at a range of around 26,000 yards. It is unfortunate that this great ship was not turned into a museum ship.
