: A good question Dave. The Trident model
: represents the Akitsu Maru as originally
: built. The ship had a flying off deck but
: the crane aft did not allow planes to land.
: In addition it seems that some structures
: were added to the aft flight deck from time
: to time. The Tiny Thingamajigs model
: represents the Akitsu Maru as modified in
: 1944 to allow for the landing of aircraft.
: The flight deck was slightly shortened but
: widened, the aft crane was removed or moved,
: and the bridge structures were moved
: slightly outboard. Also an arresting gear
: was fitted in 1944 to allow aircraft to
: land. Aircraft were reported as Kokusai
: Ki-76 (Japanese equivalent to the German
: Fiesler Storch?) and Kayaba Ka-1 autogyro.
: that vid should show some of the Ka-1 flight
: testing along with landing and take-off
: testing on board the Akitsu Maru.
: this picture shows the Akitsu Maru as
: modified with one of the Ki-76s on the
: flight deck.
