Re: 1/1250 Akitsu Maru
A good question Dave. The Trident model represents the Akitsu Maru as originally built. The ship had a flying off deck but the crane aft did not allow planes to land. In addition it seems that some structures were added to the aft flight deck from time to time. The Tiny Thingamajigs model represents the Akitsu Maru as modified in 1944 to allow for the landing of aircraft. The flight deck was slightly shortened but widened, the aft crane was removed or moved, and the bridge structures were moved slightly outboard. Also an arresting gear was fitted in 1944 to allow aircraft to land. Aircraft were reported as Kokusai Ki-76 (Japanese equivalent to the German Fiesler Storch?) and Kayaba Ka-1 autogyro.
that vid should show some of the Ka-1 flight testing along with landing and take-off testing on board the Akitsu Maru. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_aircraft_carrier_Akitsu_Maru#/media/File:AkitsuMaru.jpg
this picture shows the Akitsu Maru as modified with one of the Ki-76s on the flight deck.
