Logical that had limited time to arm her, but Combinedfleet source specifically mentions gunners manning their stations and being amongst those lost in the sinking. If armed with machine guns wouldn't seem to be much use against a declared submarine threat.
Interestingly the coloured drawing accompanying this information shows her in a medium to darkish gray which looks like basic camouflage, albeit rust streaked.
Think I'll just paint her gray.
