What I find appalling from our little ship collecting community is the total lack of comment (humanity) about 17 dead American sailors. Nowhere in the list of concerns above will you find a mention of them.
The FITZGERALD and the McCAIN are not 5.5" models in a display case or on a table.....they are real ships manned by real people at the point of the spear. Humans. They are out there....and you're (we're) not. Machines have failures, humans make mistakes. The Navy will get to the root of the problem without cover up, and heads will roll where appropriate.
Take a deep breath, mourn the dead, and let's see where the facts and investigations take us. Kevin has it right (as to at least one McCAIN causal factor...there could be more), but the rest is just idle speculation. And George, whoever your "friend in the Navy" is who said GPS would have anything to do with navigation in congested sea lanes....is grossly uninformed.
