We'll have to wait for all the data to come in. The tracking shows that before the collision the container ship made a sudden U turn and travelled some distance in the opposite direction. This put the two vessels on parallel courses rather than opposite courses. What effect this may have had remains to be revealed.
: If I remember the maritime rules of the road
: correctly, in any such converging situation,
: it is the ship to port (on the left) which
: must maneuver to avoid. The damage
: indicates that Fitzgerald was to port.
: Pending any further evidence to the
: contrary, Fitzgerald was, sadly, at fault.

: Photos that have been released show the
: 1. It appears that the destroyer's hull may
: be seriously deformed on the starboard side,
: as if bent downward at the point of impact.
: But not merely bent downwards, but V shaped
: from bow to stern.
: 2. The container ship shows significant
: scrapping along the PORT bow. This means
: that the two ships were traveling in the
: same direction. Thus they were either
: running parallel but on a converging course,
: or else one of them made a sudden turn into
: the path of the other.
