My understanding of the technical issues is that the technology involved is new, rather than mature; all cutting-edge stuff. Similar problems exist with the F-35 and used to exist with the MV-22 Osprey. Cutting-edge technology pretty much guarantees teething problems, as real-life applications uncover problems that simulations and prototypes never encountered.
