The Hornet picked up the bombers on the US west coast, and went straight to the mission, with no stopover in Hawaii. The bombers were on the west coast, and Hornet was on the west coast, on her way to the Pacific theater. Using any other carrier would have involved either taking the bombers to Hawaii first and then loading them onto a different carrier, or withdrawing that other carrier to the west coast to pick up the bombers. So the choice of Hornet might have been nothing more than taking advantage of Hornet's transit from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
