I agree with the idea that the bombload was less critical than the extra fuel. Had the longer flight deck been available, I wonder whether they would have opted for more fuel, more bombs or something else. In the event, the task force was discovered earlier than expected, and launching further from the target significantly reduced the survival chances for the crews, similar to the torpedo bomber squadrons at Midway.
