Probably but SARATOGA was in the midst of a substanial refit after being torpedoed in January and didn't even make the Battle of Midway. LEXINGTON was just completing a short refit at Pearl on the date that the bombers were put aboard HORNET in California. But the question really is, why weren't they selected to be used right from the start when planning began in January? Perhaps it's because right from the outset a deck the size of HORNET's was used as the template. And HORNET was on the East coast when planning started, and the first flight tests were made off Norfolk using the HORNET as test ship.
